Amelia Earhart, a pioneering aviator, disappeared during an attempt to circumnavigate the globe in 1937. On July 2, 1937, Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, were flying over the Pacific Ocean in their Lockheed Electra aircraft when they lost contact with radio operators.
The last known position report placed them near Howland Island. Despite an extensive search by the U.S. Coast Guard and Navy, no trace of Earhart, Noonan, or the plane was found. The official search was called off on July 19, 1937.
