In November 2004, during routine training exercises off the coast of Southern California, U.S. Navy personnel with the USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group encountered something they could not identify.
For days, radar operators aboard the USS Princeton reported strange objects descending from around 80,000 feet toward the ocean. When Navy pilots David Fravor and Alex Dietrich were sent to investigate, they found a disturbance churning in the water below — and above it, a smooth white object with no wings, rotors, exhaust, or visible means of propulsion.
The object appeared to react to Fravor’s maneuvers before accelerating away and disappearing. Minutes later, it was reportedly detected near a prearranged point roughly 60 miles away. A second flight later captured infrared footage of the object now known around the world as the “Tic Tac.”
What did these Navy aviators see over the Pacific? A secret human technology, a misunderstood sensor event, or something still beyond explanation? The Department of Defense formally released the Navy videos in 2020 and said the aerial phenomena depicted remained unidentified.
