In 1972, a group of researchers in Toronto set out to test a disturbing question: could ordinary people create a ghost simply by believing in one?
They invented Philip Aylesford — a fictional 17th-century English aristocrat with a tragic past, a forbidden love, and a violent death. Philip had never existed. Yet after months of séances, singing, table séances, and intense collective focus, the group reported knocks answering questions, lights flickering on command, cold breezes, and a table that tilted, moved, and allegedly levitated.
Then came the most unsettling part: Philip’s responses matched not only the fictional history they had created, but even the errors they had accidentally built into his story. When researchers later created entirely new imaginary spirits, including Lilith and Humphrey, they reported similar phenomena.
Was it unconscious movement and the power of suggestion? A startling case of collective psychokinesis? Or did the group’s minds somehow give form to something that began as pure fiction? This is the strange and controversial story of the Philip Experiment.
